- Writing
- The thirty-one year synthesis. Third draft, and the reviewers were right about the second one.
- In the field
- Nothing until September. The plots are under snow and staying that way until April.
- Looking for
- One doctoral student for autumn 2027, on peatland carbon. The project is half written; the other half should be yours.
- Reading
- County board forestry reports from the 1950s, looking for what the ditching actually cost at the time.
- Not doing
- New collaborations before June. I have said yes to too much and it shows in the ones I already have.

Can I use the plot data?
Yes, and you do not need to ask. Everything from 1994 onward is deposited under CC BY. If you are planning something substantial I would like to know, mostly so I can tell you which years carry caveats and which records are flagged uncertain.
Will you review my manuscript?
If it is close to what I actually work on, yes, and within three weeks. If it is soil carbon in the tropics I will decline and try to suggest somebody better rather than sit on it for two months.
Do you do media or public talks?
Gladly, and without a fee for schools, libraries and anything run by a commons or a forest owners' association. I need about a month's notice during the field season and rather less outside it.
Will you write me a reference?
If I have supervised you, taught you for a full course, or worked with you on a paper, yes - always, and I will tell you honestly if I cannot write a strong one. Two weeks' notice, and send me the job advert.
Anything not covered here: write, and say what you need in the first sentence. It gets a faster answer.
