When Bengt retired he handed me twelve waterproof notebooks and said the network was mine now. Nine of those years had never been entered into anything. The other years existed in a spreadsheet whose provenance nobody could vouch for.
So we did it properly. Every page scanned at 600 dpi and archived. Every record typed independently by two people. Every disagreement between the two versions resolved by going back to the paper, never by picking one. Where the paper itself is ambiguous - a smudged digit, a rained-on page - the record is flagged as uncertain rather than guessed.
It took two years and one full-time assistant, and it is the single most valuable thing I have done with a grant. 1,140 records are flagged uncertain out of 31,000. Anyone re-analysing the series can see exactly which ones and decide for themselves.
