A working group I led between 2020 and 2023, funded to answer a question that every individual dataset was too small to settle: does deadwood decay in Fennoscandia follow one curve, or does each stand have its own?
Twenty-nine contributed datasets, six countries, 11,400 logs. Half the work was science and half was diplomacy: no two groups had measured density the same way, and reconciling that took eighteen months and a protocol paper nobody will ever cite.
The answer is one curve with a large and predictable species term, and a residual that is almost entirely explained by initial colonisation. The pooled dataset is deposited and open, which was a condition of the funding and a fight worth having.
